The main activities of the IUPsyS Include:
  • Sponsoring International Congresses of Psychology at regular intervals (now every four years). The XXVII Congress was in Stockholm, Sweden, 2000, the XXVIII Congress was in Beijing, China, 2004,  and the XXIX Congress will be in Berlin, Germany in July, 2008.
  • Organizing and/or issuing publications, including the International Journal of Psychology; the CD ROM Psychology: Global Resource (a CD with international psychology information and resources); Proceedings of the International Congresses; the International Handbook of Psychological Science; the History of the Union, and various occasional publications. Further information on publications of the Union is given in the section on publications below.
  • Participating in major international organizations, including the International Social Science Council (ISSC) , the International Council for Science (ICSU), UNESCO, and the World Health Organization (WHO). This is described in the section below on Participation in International Organizations.
  • Fostering communication among IUPsyS National Members and taking up questions and problems raised by them.
  • Organizing or sponsoring Regional Psychological Conferences aimed at promoting psychology in that region and taking up psychological issues and themes of special relevance to a region. Regional conferences are currently held in cooperation with the International Association of Applied Psychology. The regional conference was the Asian-Pacific Regional Conference on Psychology, held in Guangzhou, China, August 27-30, 1995 (also supported by the International Association of Applied Psychology and the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology). Subsequent regional conferences have been held in South Africa, India, Dubai and Thailand.
Where a regional organization for psychology already exists, the IUPsyS cooperates directly with it, as, for example, with the European Federation of Psychologists Associations (EFPA) or the InterAmerican Society of Psychology (SIP).
  • Sponsoring and accomplishing projects that foster the development of psychology and international and professional cooperation. These have included national capacity building workshops (held at international Congresses, and held in the tsunami aftermath in Singapore); the development of international networks, such as the International Network of Psychology and the Developing World, the International Network on the Young Child and the Family, and Healthnet; coordinating interdisciplinary projects such as Psychological Dimensions of Global Change, or the Human Dimensions of Global Change: Human Perceptions and Behaviour in Sustainable Water Use project; and collecting information such as the IUPsyS initiative on Psychology in a Multidisciplinary Environment, or the Compilation and Comparative Analysis of National Psychological Codes of Ethics or the project on Terminology and Classification of Concepts in Cognitive Science, .
  • Encouraging the development of psychology as both a science and a profession.
  • Encouraging psychologists from developing countries to participate in International Congresses of Psychology and to benefit from special training seminars. For these purposes, the Union initiated Advanced Research Training Seminars (ARTS) for psychologists from developing countries in conjunction with the Brussels Congress in 1992. In collaboration with the IAAP and other organizations, the Union has organized a series of ARTS, that take place every two years at a major international Congress. They have been held in conjunction with congresses in Madrid 1994, Montréal 1996, San Francisco 1998, Stockholm 2000, Singapore 2002, Beijing 2004 and Athens 2006..

Each year the Secretary-General of the Union publishes an Annual Report that includes a summary of the activities of the Union for the previous year, and submits this report to ICSU and ISSC.
