Origins, Purpose and Membership
The International Union of Psychological Science was founded in 1951 to serve as an umbrella international voice supporting "the development of psychological science, whether biological or social, normal or abnormal, pure or applied." Today its National Members represent psychology in close to 70 countries, and its activities support psychology as a profession and as a science.

IUPsyS members are organizations that represent psychology in each country. For example, in Germany, the National Member is a federation of the national professional and scientific societies. Across countries, the National Member might be a federation of psychological associations, an Academy of Sciences, or a single national association. In addition to its National Members, IUPsyS has a number of international affiliate and liaison associations and organizations.

Activities
The main activities of the IUPsyS include sponsoring international and regional Congresses, organizing publications, developing research and documentation resources, and participating in major international organizations such as the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the International Science Council (ICSU), UNESCO, the UN and WHO to represent psychology and to encourage the involvement of psychology and psychologists in global programs.

In addition, IUPsyS develops research and capacity building programs. For example, a program called ARTS (Advanced Research Training Seminars), serves to encourage psychologists from developing countries to participate in International Congresses of Psychology and to benefit from special training seminars; IUPsyS sponsored Health Training modules for WHO serve to introduce behavioral dimensions into community health programs; IUPsyS networks (eg. HealthNet) serve to foster international contact and collaboration.
