As is the rule for international scientific unions, IUPsyS
is an organization composed of National Member organizations, not more than one National
Member per country. Some National Members are psychological associations or societies;
others are national academies of science or similar organizations. The Union has a legal
venue and is registered in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
The IUPsyS Assembly
The legislative body and final authority of the Union is its Assembly. It holds a
formal voting meeting every two years at an international congress. Each National Member,
depending upon its category of membership, is entitled to send either one or two delegates
to the Assembly.
The Executive Committee
The administrative body of the Union is its Executive
Committee which usually meets once a year and whose members are in frequent
communication. The Executive Committee includes seventeen members: the President, Past
President, two Vice-Presidents, the Secretary-General, the Deputy Secretary-General, the
Treasurer and ten Committee Members. The Assembly elects by secret ballot the President,
the two Vice-Presidents, and ten members of the Executive Committee. At least eight of the
ten members of the Executive Committee are elected from Assembly delegates, but not more
than one from any one country. The members of the Executive Committee then choose the
Secretary-General, the Deputy Secretary-General, and the Treasurer. All members elected or
appointed to the Executive Committee become members of the Assembly.
The Statutes and Rules of Procedure
Regulations about legislation and administration of the Union appear in the
Statutes and Rules of Procedure.
As revised in 2006, these are also published in the International Journal of Psychology A
psychologist who wishes to bring a matter before the Union should communicate with the delegate(s) of the country in which he or she resides. The delegates are listed in the
International Journal of Psychology in the year of each meeting of the Assembly.
